‚The Desire for Freedom. Art in Europe since 1945‘ opens at MOCAK!
We have not exactly lost count of all our openings (this was the fourth), but the MOCAK (Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow) opening was definitely a bit different than the rest.
For one: the exhibition differs from the others. On display are mostly video art works from artists like Marina Abramovic, Marcel Broodthaers, Yves Klein, Vladimir Mitrev, Wolf Vostell, Sabina Shikhlinskaya and Nil Yalter. The reason for this is that only MOCAK had the space to show these works properly. The other venues were too small. Going through their exhibition space with all those big screen videos was therefore really impressive and we loved it. Nevertheless, there are two works shown that are not videos: a stone circle by Richard Long as well as a ‘Homeless Vehicle’ by Krzysztof Wodiczko.
For another: The MOCAK staff figured out that one of the problems with openings was that people simply came late, missed the speeches but not the wine. In order to prevent that from happening (missing the speeches that is), they simply recorded them on the day before and screened them in an endless loop. That way nobody missed neither the speeches nor the wine. Pretty clever, we thought.
For yet another: There were six exhibition openings all at once so we were in good company. It was also great to see so many young people flocking to MOCAK’s exhibition space, even though it got a bit crowded inside after a while. But have a look for yourself!
And this is the speech of our curator Monika Flacke that was recorded for the opening (about one minute long):

By the way, the MOCAK is located on the grounds of Schindler’s factory – when you visit, hop on over there as well!
Other things you should not miss:
The workshop for kids at MOCAK
and of course our free exhibition app!
