Triumph of Death (The Skeletons Play for the Dance), 1944

Triumph of Death is the last picture made by the Jewish painter Felix Nussbaum. The organ player, whose instrument is silent, bears the features of the artist. Behind him stands the Angel of Death with white wings. Nussbaum’s pictorial prophecy was to prove right: on 20 June 1944 he and his wife Felka were arrested in Belgium, deported to Auschwitz and murdered there.
