The images of people reflected the self-image and the ideological foundations of the political systems. The visual media always played an important role in designing and disseminating these idealised images. The representations of healthy, happy young people were intended to convince the viewer that the system’s policies were desirable and to suggest that the successes promised in the images were actually on the way.
Particular images served to assign different roles to men and women and to stress the importance of young people in shaping the future, while Fascist and Nazi hate propaganda paved the way for the systematic exclusion and elimination of chosen enemies.
Unlike the visions of an ideal world that were disseminated in the totalitarian systems, the documentary photo campaigns in the United States focused on the poorest third of the population in order to promote a sense of solidarity.
