The Flowering of French Manuscript Illumination in the Hundred Years’ War

Famines, the great plague epidemics, civil war-like conditions and the recurring battles continually breaking out between French and English troops during the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453) present a bleak picture of the 14th and 15th centuries. In sharp contrast to this, the arts, above all gold-working and manuscript illustration, developed an accomplishment and grandeur to a degree never before seen.

One of the most significant patrons and manuscript collector of this time was the enemy of Joan of Arc: John of Lancaster, Duke of Bedford. From 1422-35 he reigned in France for his young nephew, the English king Henry VI. The politically important marriage of Bedford with Anne of Burgundy was decisive for his prestige, for the expansion of his art collections and thus for manuscript production in Paris.

At the center of the exhibition is the Fine Art Facsimile edition of The Bedford Book of Hours (London, British Library, MS Add. 18850) alongside other fine works of manuscript illustration that arose around the Bedford master.
