Tartans worn by Emperor William II
William II was given several Scottish tartans as a gift from his grandmother, Queen Victoria.
At the age of four he appeared for the first time wearing a kilt on the occasion of the wedding
of his uncle, the Prince of Wales, in March 1863. Gratefully he remembers in his memoirs:
„I will always associate cherished memories with this stay at Balmoral, since my grandmother
showed me an extraordinary sign of her affection. Namely she surprised me with the honour to
be allowed to wear the costume of the Royal Clan of the Stewarts”."
