Blog Parade: “Europe and the Sea – What does the sea mean to me?” | #DHMMeer

Europe is a maritime continent in geographical terms. Taking the length of the coastline relative to the land area, it has a greater proportion in contact with the sea than any other continent. Yet the sea is part of people’s daily reality only when they go there on holiday, or if they live at the coast. Now the Deutsches Historisches Museum (German Historical Museum) is inviting you to reveal your personal relationship with the sea in its blog parade, running from 20 June to 25 July 2018. The hashtag: #DHMMeer.

Blog Parade for the exhibition on Europe and the Sea in Berlin

Our blog parade kicks off with the start of our exhibition on Europe and the Sea. The exhibition shows how the sea has shaped Europe’s development and how it continues to influence our lives today – as an arena for territorial and trading interests, as a bridge and barrier, as a resource, and as a catalyst for imagination and yearning.

For centuries, the sea was seen less as a place for recreation than as a realm to have command over; naval supremacy was a key factor in European power politics. Currently, the role of the sea as both a bridge and barrier to the continent has acquired new importance. Millions of people fleeing war, oppression, or poverty have set out to reach Europe. Topics such as the use and over-use of the sea are also of great concern. They are crucially important to the future of the environment and the global climate.

What significance does the sea have for you personally, as a European? Tell us your own tales of the sea. What role does the sea play for Europe today? We look forward to hearing from you and to enjoying a lively exchange of opinions!

Suggested subjects for the blog parade #DHMMeer

With the #DHMMeer hashtag, we want people to think about the sea’s importance to Europe in the broad context of its cultural history: tourism and sustainability, resources and environmental pollution, trade and expansionism. The sea has also played an integral part in the import of exotic foodstuffs, cloth and porcelain. Painters, writers and artists of all kinds have gained inspiration from the sea.

• What does the sea mean to you personally, as a European?
• Summer is here and the holiday season has arrived on the beaches of Europe: what is your most memorable experience at the seaside or on the sea?
• Painting, photography, writing – you could take us on a journey through the most moving encounters with the sea in the history of European art and literature?
• The sea and research: What lies hidden in the depths and what resources could be exploited?
• The sea and the environment: What models and options can you think of for tackling the pollution of the oceans? Might they even generate entirely new kinds of work?
• The sea and trade: How does the import and export of goods through our ports shape the way we live now, in comparison to the past?
• The sea and food: How has the sea influenced our food, our cuisine and our diets?

Who can take part in our blog parade?

EVERYONE. We’re inviting bloggers of every type and all persuasions to come and join the blog parade! We hope to get lots of different perspectives and enlivening debates on the subject of Europe and the Sea. You are welcome to cast your net further to take in topics such as the importance of the shipping lanes, or life on the waves. The blog parade is deliberately broadly based so you can give full reign to your inspiration. We can’t wait to see what you have to say!

We are also calling on our fellow cultural professionals to join us too! What significance do the sea, ports and Europe have to your institution’s collections, or your research? Tell us the inside story!

Cultural blog parades pass the baton in the European Year of Cultural Heritage

We are helping to keep the relay of cultural blog parades going in 2018, the European Year of Cultural Heritage. Together with two other cultural institutions, we are illuminating Europe from very different perspectives. We take the baton from Schlösser und Gärten in Deutschland e.V. and on 23 September we hand it on to Burg Posterstein Museum.

So now is the time: join us and write about Europe and the sea – we’d love to hear from you!
