UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT 1949
1999 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany, and also of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It will then also be 10 years since the fall of the Wall - the event which marked the start of German reunification after forty years of division. Although assessments may differ, the balance sheet is positive. After the catastrophe of the Second World War, the longest epoch of peace in German history brought the success of parliamentary democracy, the welfare state and a civilised society. The division of Germany was overcome by the peaceful revolution in the GDR, establishing liberty and unity for all Germans.
An extensive film programme and a wide range of guided tours for groups and individuals complement the exhibition. Project office D-10117 Berlin Phone: (+49-30) 20 30

The exhibition on two floors provides a chronological and a thematic overview, recalling important people and events, and investigating the common ground and the differences. It deals with politics and economics, with the circumstances and pioneering decisions involved, with turbulence in culture and society, and above all with the realities of people's lives. In the central light court of the renovated Martin-Gropius-Bau museum, "Building Site Germany" invites the visitor to draw a personal summary of the still short history of our reunited nation. This anniversary show on the history of the Federal Republic presents unusual and moving exhibits, many of which have been made available specially for this exhibition by private individuals, companies and institutions. Seven renowned exhibition designers place their mark on the 13 sections, so the visitor can look forward to a succession of spectacular rooms and images.
