Zeughauskino film programme
In cooperation with the Film Cultural Centre in the Protestant Association for Media Communication and the Cultural Office of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD)
Unlike the figure of the priest, cardinal or pope, cinema has shown relatively little interest in the Evangelical pastor. However, embedded in society’s expectations and demands on the Protestant pastor that have taken on different forms in different cultures, a variety of pastors have made their way onto the international movie screen. Best known are pastoral figures in Scandinavian productions. They tend to show the minister’s existence divided between church and congregation, between religiosity and practical ministry to the faithful – a balancing act that not seldom plunges the clergymen into personal crises: doubts, guilt pangs, depressions. The retrospective “In the Name of God” brings together exemplary works from Scandinavia and other film cultures, inviting viewers to a passage through international film history and its images of the Protestant pastor.
