Around the World.
Tourism posters from the collection of the German Historical Museum
An exhibition of the German Historical Museum
18 April to 1 September 2013
Curator: Andrea von Hegel
With “Around the World” the German Historical Museum continues its series of exhibitions devoted to its own collections and for the first time shows a representative selection of tourism posters mainly from the 1920s and 1930s as well as the 1950s and 1960s. Posters by such noted graphic artists as Ottomar Anton, Ludwig Hohlwein, Donald Brun, Herbert Leupin or Jupp Wiertz use decorative and auspicious motifs to advertise for shipping lines, airlines and railways as well as travel destinations far and near. They take the visitors along on a journey round the world: to the European metropolises, to the Mediterranean countries, to the Near East, to Africa and Asia, to Australia, to North and South America. Contemporary travel guides and maps as well as photos of German cruise ships and advertising material for airline companies supplement the exhibition and convey impressions of the world of travel and life on board the different means of tourist travel.
