Thomas Hoepker, born in Munich in 1936, studied art history and archaeology, but his real passion was for photography. An autodidact, he has been publishing his photographs since 1959; after his photos appeared in the magazines “Münchner Illustrierte” and “Kristall”, he was taken on as a photo reporter by the weekly magazine “Stern” in 1964. In 1974 his wife Eva Windmöller was the first “Stern” journalist to be accredited in the GDR. Together they moved to Berlin (East). Windmöller and Hoepker reported with text and image about life in East Germany under Socialism, about which many citizens in the West knew very little. Hoepker remained loyal to “Stern” in his capacity as photographer and art director until 1989. He subsequently became a member of the renowned photo agency “Magnum”, of which he was the first German to act as president, from 2003 to 2006. Thomas Hoepker is one of the internationally best known photographers and travels the entire world for his reportages and documentary films. Since 1989 he has been living as a freelance photographer in New York.
