Hanover
Queen Victoria was a descendant of the ruling House of Hanover. The personal union between
England and Hanover, which had lasted for 123 years, ended with Victoria’s ascension to
the English throne. During these 123 years the English King had simultaneously been the
Elector of Hanover (King of Hanover since 1814). In 1714 Elector George of Hanover became
George I, King of England. He and his son never felt particularly at home in Enlgand.
Victoria’s grandfather, George III, was the first of the Hanoverian Kings to feel British.
