He was succeeded by his sons George IV and William IV. When their niece Victoria ascended the English throne, another son of George III, Ernest Augustus, became King of Hanover, due to different laws of succession. As a symbol of his royal dignity he had the Hanoverian crown jewels modeled on the English crown jewels, kept in the Tower of London.
