Between Osborne and Balmoral
Initially Victoria and Albert lived in Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
In 1844 the couple commissioned the construction of Osborne House on the Isle of Wright,
to the South of the English Channel coast. The house and the gardens imitated Italian
models. The couple now had four children and shared many of the middle-class interests of
their time. Inward-looking and of narrow morals, one was corresponding intensely with
one’s friends and family and kept a diary. Above that, Albert showed a strong interest
in the technical progress of the time. Osborne House was equipped with gas lighting and
four bathrooms with fitted showers.
