Guided Tour

We would like to present to you a survey of 50 years of German history, focusing on political history, as well as the history of the society, culture and everyday life. In 1949, four years after World War II, two German Republics were founded: the Federal Republic in the west was established as a liberal-capitalist parliamentary democracy; the Democratic Republic in the east as a communist dictatorship under the aegis of the USSR.

First let us reconstruct some of the diverse paths and experiences of the German people from 1949 to 1999, allowing you, the visitor, to explore the history of those years. At the end of this historical journey, we will enter the glass-roofed court of the Martin-Gropius-Bau and have a closer look at the "Construction Site-Germany", ten years after reunification in 1990. Thus at the end of the 20th century, we seek to utilize our historical memories to become a resource for the future: to understand how the dictatorial challenge of the Democratic Republic in the east fostered the strengthening of the liberal democracy in the Federal Republic, which in the long run brought a stabilizing effect on both Germanys. A condition which, in time, enabled the reunification of Germany and the beginning toward European unity.

Sat/Sun at 3 pm, groups are requested to make a reservation, duration 90 min.
