6. A FORUM FOR CULTURE
The original aim of the Goethe Institute
was to promote German language and culture abroad.
However, the host countries themselves had much to offer,
especially at the level of cultural dialogue.
Often the only missing factor was a suitable venue
for concerts or exhibitions, and the Goethe Institutes
were able to provide solutions.
In many places they became cultural centres
that allowed contact with both German and local culture.
These days a lack of opportunities for travel and
training
often pose problems for local cultural milieus.
Workshops with German film-makers,
musicians and artists aim to provide stimulation and insights
into international developments.
These seminars will be a success if they manage
to establish long-term local structures --
such as a film festival or a university seminar.
