Sixty years after the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and twenty years after the fall of the Wall, the exhibition shows how artists in both parts of the country reflected on contemporary history in their works. Based on some 350 paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, installations and books by 120 different artists and writers, the exhibition shows how the different forms of art can convey intellectual, cultural and political topics without exploiting them in the sense of political messages.
The exhibition is divided into five chronologically arranged sections: “Continuity or New Beginning? 1945-1949”, “Dispute about the Image of Man, 1950-1959”, “Contemporaneousness” and “Trauma of the Past” for the years 1960-1979 and “Manic Normality in Germany 1980-1989”.
The exhibition was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in cooperation with Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH. Curated by Stephanie Barron (LACMA) and Eckhart Gillen (Kulturprojekte Berlin), the exhibition was generously supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie, the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany and the National Endowment for the Arts.
