Following the victory of the Prussian-German troops against France, William I was
proclaimed German Emperor in the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles on 18th January 1871. The German Crown
Princess’s efforts remained largely limited to family life, womens’ education, her painting and
philantropical endeavours. The short reign of her husband, who was termianlly ill when he succeeded
to the throne and died after only 99 days, abruptly terminated all her political ambitions in 1888.
