Cultural
Exchange Between Germany and Scandinavia
Literature is only modern if
it presents problems for debate, so claimed the
Danish literary critic Georg Brandes. Brandes had
been refused a chair in Copenhagen, and was given
the following advice by Henrik Ibsen, the
Norwegian playwright whose works had caused a
furore in German theatres: »One victory in
Germany, and you'll be king of the castle back
home!«
